Will Tron Ares run into the same quagmire that destroyed The Matrix Resurrections? The Matrix was once an impossibly good piece of filmmaking that broke many milestones in cinematic science-fiction storytelling. Yet Resurrections sounded its death knell. Will the same fate await Tron Ares next month?
Our editorial pool is on the fence on this one and several members of our panel hold strong reservations. The biggest issue is that while the original Tron and Tron Legacy were INSIDE the computer and video game, giving the filmmakers a wide range of possible interpretations, this movie brings Tron Ares into our normal, well-known, and predictable world. We are no longer on some far-away planet, we are not in the distant future and we are not on The Grid. There is very little room for imagination, for creating a fetching world that could ensnare the viewer in possibilities as did the first two films.
