2013 Hyundai Genesis Series Presented by West Coast Midnight Run

It's possibly true you cannot really label the Genesis sports coupe as a muscle car and a comparison for some is so outlandish but hey, the Ford Mustang is slated for a turbo-charger, uses Mazda components and is headed to Europe to compete with the likes of BMW, Lamborghini, and Mercedes roadsters and these motoring specimens are not a league out of the reach of a road-going thoroughbred such as the Mustang.

For many the Genesis from Hyundai is tagged as an able sedan that has more in common with the Toyota Camry and Ford Taurus. The new Taurus is positively styled as an upscale luxury car with sleek European lines while Hyundai’s Genesis GT has a more rakish, angular, aggressive sheet metal with flares and intakes suggestive of racetrack design.

Mid year in 2013 we reviewed the Hyundai specs for 2012 and the V-8 engine was not shown, only the V-6 for

the coupe. We contacted Hyundai PR Manager Derek Joyce and he stated “The Genesis Coupe never had a V-8. You are confusing with the sedan which has offered a V-8 and V-6 since launch” (in 2009). Our reporter repeatedly questioned the lack of this option for the coupe “in conclusion Hyundai has no plans on the horizon of offering the coupe in V-8 trim at any point in the future?” Derek Joyce’s response “Unfortunately, we are not at liberty to discuss these kinds of forward product planning issues.”

However as of late 2013, the press site for Hyundai lists the 2013 Genesis coupe in the 3.8 L V-6 and top of the line 5.0 R-Spec which sports a 5.0 L V-8 aluminum block engine and cylinder heads with 32 valve DOHC direct injection system.

The 5.0 R-Spec outputs close to 430 bhp mated to an 8-speed automatic with “manual” SHIFTRONIC option. It's a lot of power and features if you are not planning on racing it on the track
