a wormhole leading to another galaxy, New Eden. Soon colonists start populating Eden and eventually the wormhole crashes and contact is lost.
Thousands of years later, five major galactic empires emerge in Eden, all space-faring, while Earth and the Milky Way are lost in time.
Players select their race and are assigned a spaceship which is used for commerce, warfare and leisure. Planets operate in each empire and there are social, political, technological and religious layers in the game which is very similar to being in command of a starship in the Star Trek Universe. Some activities can be done on automatic while a player is logged off however combat can only be made in real time and involves using targeting systems and pre-computed variables before firing on another ship.
As of 2013 EVE Online has grown its customer base to nearly 500,000 subscribers worldwide.
